Connie Chung interrupts Whoopi Goldberg on ‘The View,’ jokes about Maury Povich giving her a big ring: ‘He thinks I’m Jewish’

Trailblazing broadcast journalist Connie Chung made a headline-worthy entrance of her own on Wednesday’s episode of The View.

In the moments after the live telecast returned from a commercial break, moderator Whoopi Goldberg looked to her left to address Chung before introducing her impending interview. “Connie Chung, take your mask off, girl,” Goldberg said, as the camera cut to a shot of cohost Joy Behar helping Chung remove a medical mask while the news icon fiddled with her phone.

Goldberg continued with her segue, while Chung comically interrupted her twice. “Legendary TV journalist Connie Chung…” Goldberg said, while Chung attempted to get her attention as the actress spoke.

“Well, I’m turning my phone off,” Chung said, before speaking up during Goldberg’s segue once again. When Goldberg turned to address Chung, the latter said, “Whoopi, I’m just turning my phone off.”

“That’s okay, I’m going to introduce you while you do it,” Goldberg replied, with Chung clarifying she wanted to switch the device off in case her husband “Maury [Povich] calls me, you know.”

Chung then called Povich her “baby daddy” before the interview continued. Later in the segment, as Sunny Hostin discussed Chung’s lasting impact in the broadcast journalism space, she called out the panelist’s jewelry.

“I’m a little distracted because she’s got glitter,” Chung said, with Goldberg jumping in to highlight that she was “blinded” by a particularly large ring on Chung’s right hand.

“It’s Maury bling. It’s good, right?” Chung, who converted to Judaism before marrying Povich in 1984, quipped. “He thinks I’m Jewish,” she added.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Chung for clarification on the comment.

Chung appeared on The View to promote her memoir, Connie, which chronicles the 78-year-old’s barrier-breaking career in the journalism industry, including becoming the first Asian woman to anchor a major-network evening news show.
