Decades before the Golden State Warriors became the self-proclaimed “Light Years” franchise, they were a team based in the Tri-State area. From 1947-62, Philadelphia hosted the Warriors. Wilt Chamberlain led the team for three years before moving west to San Francisco. In honor of such an era, the current Warriors will wear a jersey similar to the Philadelphia years.
Following a tease of the announcement, the Warriors revealed the classic jerseys for the 2024-25 season. Chamberlain earned an MVP in his rookie season and ultimately averaged 34.6 points and 25.6 rebounds in 36 games. To provide context, the league didn’t have anywhere the number of franchises as in the current era.
Although Chamberlain didn’t lead the Warriors to an NBA championship, his larger- than-life presence elevated the franchise.
Stephen Curry not only elevated the NBA but also took the league and basketball at large to another realm. With Curry as their guide, the Warriors wish to honor the past but create another era of winning basketball.
After missing the playoffs last season, despite winning 46 games, Golden State disappeared from the minds of NBA fans. The new guard seems ready to take hold of the league. However, Curry’s Olympic campaign reassured fans he still had it, although his team is no longer ahead of the curve as they previously thought.
Perhaps inadvertently, the Warrior’s classic jerseys represent the older guard still holding onto the piece of real estate in the league, no matter how small the square feet. Can the Warriors live up to its historic past?
While Curry is still a star, his team must keep up with their franchise’s guide, or the Warriors will surely lose track of their remaining potential to win at a high level.
